Harvard! The zenith of American educational excellence. Its very name connotes our country’s brightest. What can the President and his minions possibly be thinking by such virulent attacks? No administration has ever attacked one of our nation’s Universities on such a broad basis. Harvard must have done something terrible.
Located in the Boston area, Harvard is the oldest University in the United States, founded in 1636. More than 20,000 students attend. Its legacy includes 8 Presidents, 24 heads of states and a plethora of Nobel Laureates, as well as an array of billionaires. It is truly unique. So, what happened?
What happened is that the Trump administration’s aggressive attacks on diversity and immigration collided with Harvard’s liberal policies. 14% of Harvard’s enrollment is Asian. This year the school enrolled 2,000 Freshmen… 25% of whom are Asian. In March more than 100 students protested in support of Palestinians over the war in Gaza. The school was accused of being slow to respond.
Harvard, like many comparable Universities, is assumed to have a liberal bias, encouraging discussions that promote equality, both racial and economic, a concern for the environment, access to scientific advances, etc. These attitudes often conflict with conservative philosophies. The breadth of governments’ current attacks, however, are unprecedented.
The Trump administration has initiated actions against Harvard, accusing the university of fostering antisemitism, lacking viewpoint diversity, and maintaining ties to the Chinese government. They have directed the Department of Homeland Security to revoke Harvard’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which would prevent the university from enrolling international students.
This action also threatens the visa status of over 7,000 international students currently enrolled. The legality of the government’s action is now being fought in the courts.
Simultaneously, the Trump administration has frozen over $3 billion in federal research funding, demanding the university comply with certain conditions, including auditing the political viewpoints of its community and dismantling specific student organizations. The Federal authorities have also threatened Harvard’s tax-exempt status and proposed capping international student enrollment at 15%.
These measures are part of a broader campaign by the Federal authorities targeting elite universities perceived as bastions of liberal ideology. The conflict has galvanized the Harvard community, leading to protests and demonstrations in support of international students and academic freedom. Other major Universities around the country wait, nervously, understanding that if the Trump administration succeeds that they will be the next target in the crosshairs.
It is important to note that in the 1960’s the Kennedy Administration threatened to withhold Federal funds from Land Grant Universities to enforce racial integration. Those schools received direct Federal money, whereas Harvard is a private institution.
This confrontation reflects broader tensions between the federal government and higher education institutions over issues of free speech, diversity, and autonomy. The outcome of this dispute will likely have significant implications for the future of academic freedom.
